TSB's Beliefs, Mission and Vision

The collaborative process used at Tennessee School for the Blind (TSB) to develop the Beliefs, Mission and Vision statements was directed by a committee of relevant stakeholders. The committee included faculty, cottage staff, parents/guardians, community representatives, and alumni.

Beliefs:

▪ Every child, regardless of the nature of his/her disabling condition, can learn.

▪ Every child in the State of Tennessee with a Visual Impairment is entitled to the highest quality education possible.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Tennessee School for the Blind is to provide free, appropriate educational services to eligible students who are legally blind and to provide technical assistance to families and agencies serving children who are visually challenged.

Vision:

The program is designed around a diversified curriculum that addresses the educational needs of a broad spectrum of children ranging from the academically gifted to the developmentally delayed. In addition to academic learning, a main thrust of the program is to teach, train, and/or equip blind children with those special skills, techniques

and methods they need in order to function at their optimum level in society. The program is permeated with the philosophy that every individual is a person of worth, with the right to receive assistance in reaching his/her maximum level of functioning. The instructional staff, including classroom and special area teachers, the residential staff, the support staff, and the outreach staff comprise a special team dedicated to the implementation of this philosophy through the provision of a totally individualized program for each student.
