What content is blocked by the TN
Department of Education?
Websites that are categorized as one of the following subjects are blocked:
Adults Only: Material labeled by its author or publisher as being strictly
for adults.
Hate / Discrimination: Advocating discrimination against others based on
race, religion, gender, nationality, or sexual orientation.
Illegal: Advocating, promoting, or giving advice on carrying out acts widely
considered illegal.
Porn: Material intended to be sexually arousing or erotic. (See also Sex and
Nudity)
Sex: Images or descriptions of sexual activity. Any sexual merchandise. (See
also Nudity)
Violence: Graphic images or written descriptions of wanton violence or grave
injury. Includes graphically violent games.
Chat: Chat sites, services that allow short messages to be sent to others
immediately in real time. Downloadable chat software. (See also Moderated)
Drugs: Advocating or promoting recreational use of any controlled substance.

Free Pages: Sites where home page space is offered for free. Typically,
these sites do not prevent capricious abuse of their services by users who
post offensive content under multiple pseudonyms, making them difficult to
track. Individual free pages that have been reviewed by N2H2 are removed
from this category.
Gambling: Gambling services or information relevant primarily to gambling.
Tasteless/Gross: Bodily functions. Tasteless humor. Graphic medical photos.
Profanity: Crude, vulgar, or obscene language or gestures.
Lingerie: Models in lingerie.
Nudity: Bare or visible genitalia, pubic hair, buttocks, female breast. (See
also Lingerie and Sex)
School Cheating Info Pages: Promoting plagiarism or similar cheating among
students.
Suicide / Murder: Information on committing murder or suicide.

Alcohol and Tobacco
Exception categories reflect material that would normally be categorized as
one of the blocked subjects listed above, such as hate/discrimination,
violence or sex, but provide access to sites containing valuable
information. The exception categories include:
Education Material: Material under another category, like Sex, Nudity,
Violence, which has educational value. For example, classic literature and
sex education.
For Kids Sites: Sites that are designed specifically for kids.
History: Material that falls under another category, such as Sex or
Violence, that is non-fiction and historically significant.
Medical Material: Material under another category, such as Nudity or
Tasteless/Gross, which relates to the study or practice of medicine.
Moderated: A Message/Bulletin Board or Chat that prevents offensive material
from being posted.
Text/Spoken Only Material: Material under another category that is strictly
verbal, such as text or spoken word. This can be used, for example, to
distinguish written erotica from graphic porn sites.
